KUALA LUMPUR: Penang folk were left stunned by the flash floods which crippled parts of the state following prolonged rain which began yesterday afternoon.
One resident, who only wished to be known as Susi, from Pauh Indah, Permatang Pauh, considered yesterday’s downpour as one of the worst she had experienced.
She said the rain began just before midnight and continued for more than five hours.
"I have never come across such a situation. A few months ago we did experience heavy rain but yesterday's was one of the worst. My daughter and I were terrified," said Susi, who lives at the Taman Pauh Indah flats.
The flats, she said, has five blocks. None of the residents left their homes due to the heavy rain, she said.
"Throughout the night, the wind was so strong that I was afraid it would rip off the roofs. I was praying very hard for our safety,"she said. Susi said she also urged her daughter not to go to work this morning for her safety.
Susi said the rain eventually let up at 7.45am today. When she peered out the window, she saw several roads inundated with floods.
Meanwhile, Facebook user Mohammad Hafiz posted a one minute, 29-second video which showed how flood waters had engulfed the exit leading to the Juru toll plaza.
When contacted, he said he was on his way to Kuala Lumpur when he came across the incident.
The video was taken around 11am today. I was driving and noticed that some roads heading towards the Juru toll plaza were submerged in flood water.
“I decided to record the situation to inform my friends and family who were planning to drive to stay safe and plan their journey wisely,” he said.
