Fine weather closes flood relief centres on Penang island, evacuees down to 5,604 on mainland

GEORGE TOWN: The floods situation in Penang continues to improve with the numbers of victims seeking shelter at flood relief centres reduced.

At 6pm today, the numbers of flood victims have dropped to 5,604 people compared with 7,211 people on Monday.

Of the total, 3,674 flood victims were in the Seberang Prai Utara district, while another 1,930 flood victims were in the Seberang Prai Tengah district. There were 4,648 and 2,315 flood victims in both districts, respectively yesterday.

State secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus said that out of the 70 relief centres opened on the mainland, 46 were closed.

All the three relief centres opened at Seberang Perai Selatan was closed by 12pm today, he said.

The situation is expected to improve further owning to the fine weather.

Meanwhile, the last remaining 30 flood victims in the Northeast district on the island, have since returned home.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak visited and spent some time with the flood victims during his half-day visit to the state this morning.

"Our priority now is to provide the very best for the flood victims," he added.
