Sabah flood situation improves, but evacuee number increases

KOTA KINABALU: The number of flood evacuees in Beaufort and Membakut has risen to 637 at two relief centres, compared to 566 recorded last night.

However, 12 of 14 schools in Papar and Beaufort which were closed yesterday have been reopened.

State education director Datuk Maimunah Suhaibul said that the two closed schools in Beaufort are SK Jabang and SK Kg Brunei. Their closure has affected 278 pupils and 39 teachers.

According to the state Civil Defence Force, 127 flood victims are taking shelter at the Membakut multipurpose hall; 463 victims are at the SMK St Patrick school hall; and 47 victims are housed at the Membakut Kafa building, as of noon.

The weather today is fair, and Sungai Membakut’s water level has declined to 6.13 metres (the danger level) from 6.48 metres last night.
