KOTA BHARU: An 85-year-old man was trapped in a 7.5m deep well for almost four hours before his disappearance was realised by his relatives in Kampung Banggol, Jalan Pantai Cahaya Bulan, yesterday.
The victim was believed to have fallen into the well at about 4am while taking his ablution following water shortage at his home.
The incident was discovered by his 80-year-old wife at 8.30am when she was about to get some water from the well.
Realising that her husband was trapped, she then called up her neighbours for help.
The victim’s daughter Rosidah, 64, said during the incident she was learning the Quran at a nearby surau before she rushed home.
“We immediately called the Fire and Rescue Department to report on the incident. Firemen came and rescue my father before he was sent to Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II for further treatment but was release shortly,” she said.
Rasidah said her father was lucky that the water level was only at 0.3m.
Meanwhile, district fire and rescue department chief Zaini Bidin said 10 firemen were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 8.42am.
Zaini said the team took 40 minutes using a pulley system pull out the victim from the well.
He said the victim was given early treatment by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services before he was sent to the hospital.
