KUALA LUMPUR: Most Malaysians are familiar with the age-old Kelantanese folk song Wau Bulan (moon kite), which is traditionally performed in the inimitable Dikir Barat style.
But have they ever been treated to a performance of the trademark east coast anthem by a chorus of lively young Westerners?
Video of a Dikir Barat performance of Wau Bulan by a group of people as far away from Kelantan as you can get – Minnesota, USA – was recently uploaded to YouTube, and quickly went viral.
The showcase by Collegeville’s St John’s Boys Choir – who went on to perform the song at a concert in Chicago – is rousing and impressively ‘on-point’.
Watch the video below – and you might just wonder if the talented kids have redefined the very notion of Dikir ‘BARAT.’
