Fast food chain Chicken Cottage lands in TTDI

KUALA LUMPUR: Fast food chain Chicken Cottage has expanded its operations by opening its second outlet in Malaysia, this time in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI).

With the opening of its TTDI restaurant, the chain now has 90 outlets worldwide. Its first outlet in Malaysia is in Kuala Terengganu.

Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman, said Chicken Cottage aims to open outlets in Putrajaya and Johor in the near future.

“Before opening a new outlet, we conduct a thorough study and identify the demographics of a particular area for at least six months to ensure smooth operations and sufficient manpower.

“It would cost franchisees around RM1 million to open an outlet in Malaysia,” he told a press conference at the launch of the TTDI outlet today.

Also present were Chicken Cottage Holdings Sdn Bhd chairman, Datuk Wan Nawawi Wan Ismail; Terengganu Incorporated Sdn Bhd (Terengganu Inc) president, Dr Wan Rudirman Wan Razak, and Chicken Cottage (M) Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Mohd Anuar Osman.

Chicken Cottage first began operations in the UK in 1994, before TI Global Food Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of Terengganu Inc, acquired a 70 per cent stake of the company in 2014. The remaining 30 per cent stake was acquired in April last year.

Ahmad Razif said Chicken Cottage has halal certification from religious departments in both Malaysia and abroad.

“Based on the ‘halal toyyiban’ concept, the state government will ensure that all its franchises, especially those overseas, bear the Chicken Cottage name in line with syariah compliancy.

“Opening franchises abroad will also enable Muslims to enjoy halal food. The non-Muslim community has also demonstrated their acceptance of the concept as it offers quality and clean food,” he said.

They are looking to open 250 more Chicken Cottage outlets worldwide, including in Nigeria, Spain, Pakistan, as well as neighbouring countries like Thailand, China, India and Singapore.

Five outlets in Dubai are expected to be launched this year.

Meanwhile, Wan Nawawi said TTDI was selected as the location for the Klang Valley’s first Chicken Cottage outlet as the residential area borders Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

“On top of being known as a commercial area near One Utama, Ikea, KPJ Damansara and Tropicana City Mall, TTDI also has MRT connectivity.

“Chicken Cottage has the potential to compete with other renowned ‘Quick Service Restaurants (QSR)’,” he said.
