Prominent lawyer Shafee Abdullah pays Najib a visit

KUALA LUMPUR: Prominent lawyer Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah paid Datuk Seri Najib Razak a visit today as he was seen entering the former Prime Minister's residence in Taman Duta at about 6.15pm.

Shafee arrived at the police post in Jalan Langgak Duta in a chauffeur-driven black continental car.

He introduced himself at the post, before he was allowed in.

A source at the scene said Shafee was called to the house to discuss urgent matters.

"We dont know what they talked about but maybe it's to get legal consultation and opinion about Najib's ongoing police investigation," the source said.

Apart from the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is also carrying out an investigation on Najib and those close to him.

When asked if Najib wanted Shafee to represent him in court, the source said the possibility of that could not be ruled out.

Shafee was seen leaving the residence about half an hour later.

Previously, Shafee and Najib were embroiled in an allegation that the former was paid RM9.5 million to carry out prosecution against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court in the PKR de facto leader's sodomy appeal.

Anwar took the matter to court, however the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November last year allowed the government's application to strike out Anwar's originating summons, stating that there was nothing to support the pay off allegation.

Prior to that, Anwar filed a discovery application for Shafee and Najib to disclose their financial statements claiming that a sum of RM9.5 million was paid by the former prime minister to Shafee in two tranches in which the first payment of RM4.3 million was made on Sept 11, 2013, and the second one, a total of RM5.2 million was made on Feb 17, 2014.

On the alleged two payments, the KL High Court said Anwar did not give any supporting document to support his allegation.

This meeting between Shafee and Najib comes at a time when two of Najib's lawyers, Harpal Singh Grewal and M. Athimulan just withdrew from the former prime minister's legal team.

Earlier it was reported that Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abidin and six of his colleagues will be replacing Harpal and his team in representing Najib over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) related scandal.
