KUALA LUMPUR: Sungai Besar Umno division chief Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos is expected to appear at the Ampang Jaya police headquarters here tomorrow to have his statements recorded.
Jamal, who went missing from his bed at the Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital on Friday, will also call for a press conference to explain his “disappearance” after giving his statement to the police.
In a voice recording released to the media via the WhatsApp mobile messaging application, Jamal denied allegations he was running away from the police and attributed his disappearance to a misunderstanding over his case.
“I will hold a press conference to response to claims suggesting that running away when placed under police remand.
“This is not true. Like I had said before, there seems to be a misunderstanding.
“Nevertheless, I will resolve this confusion by appearing at the Ampang Jaya police headquarters (to give my statement,” he said.
It was reported that Jamal went missing from the hospital, where he was admitted for back pain on Friday.
He was earlier charged with causing public nuisance in an incident on Oct 5 last year, when he led a protest at the Selangor state secretariat building’s front gate by smashing crates of beer with a sledgehammer.
The demonstration was held as a sign of protest against the then-controversial Better Beer Festival 2017.
He was charged under Section 290 of the Penal Code and is facing a RM400 fine if convicted.
It was understood Jamal’s absence was noticed at 5.30pm when the Shah Alam deputy court registrar arrived at the hospital.
According to his lawyer, Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin, Jamal went missing since 3pm after his case was heard before magistrate Raja Noor Dilla Raja Mahyaldin.
Jamal had pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him inside his ward.
Raja Noor Dilla set bail at RM3,000 in one surety and fixed June 8 as mention at the Shah Alam magistrate’s court.
