TAWAU: Tawau has the potential to become an Asian hub for agriculture and seafood production, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said.
“This district is not only blessed with logs and forestry resources, but products from the sea (as well). (They) have great potential to be developed.
“The agriculture sector (here), which includes fruit cultivation, is also good due to the fertile soil. If more land (is developed), the government and private sector would be able to provide jobs for young people in Sabah,” he said during an iftar event at Masjid Al-Kauthar here last night.
Shafie, who is also state Finance Minister, added that the government is now prioritising and identifying sectors that could provide more jobs and spur the economy.
He also reminded state leaders to be good examples for the community.
“Ramadhan is the best opportunity to do good deeds by helping poor people in this district, especially those from the islands,” he added.
