BUKIT MERTAJAM: A man dies while another loses his leg in separate accidents in Permatang Pauh and Seberang Jaya today.
In a fatal crash in the North-South Expressway (NSE), a motorcyclist was killed when he was run over by a lorry in front of Seberang Jaya Hospital.
The deceased had rammed into the door of a car which had stopped in the emergency lane, causing him to be thrown off his machine.
Meanwhile, at the Jalan Permatang Pauh traffic light junction, a pedestrian sustained serious injuries, including losing a leg, when he was knocked down by a lorry in a hit-and-run incident.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said in the 1.30pm accident at Km136 of the NSE, Ng Kim Sneah, 49, died on the spot due to severe head and bodily injuries.
He said the accident was caused by the car driver who, on his way from Prai to the Seberang Jaya roundabout, had stopped his car at the emergency lane.
“He had stopped, thinking there was problem with his brake. He immediately opened the car door. His action caused the deceased to ram into the car door. As a result of the crash, the deceased flew off his machine on to the middle of the road and was run over by the lorry,” he added.
Nik Ros said in the accident at Permatang Pauh, the victim lost his leg when he was hit by a lorry. The victim is in a coma at the Seberang Jaya Hospital.
It is learnt that police are tracking the lorry driver. Those with information are urged to contact police.
