KAJANG: A school here has been ordered closed for two weeks after an outbreak of mumps there.
It was understood that at least 70 per cent of its students were infected, as were several teachers.
Checks by the New Straits Times Press at SMA Perseketuan (SMAP) Kajang showed the school to be almost deserted, with only teachers and administrators at the school seen going about their business.
A source said the school had been ordered closed for two weeks to ensure that the viral disease would not spread.
“Some teachers were also infected. At first, only a few students came down with mumps and were sent to a clinic for treatment. However, it soon began to rapidly spread,” the source, who wished to remain anonymous, told the NSTP.
He said the students would only be allowed back on Nov 9, a mere four days before the start of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination.
It is understood that SMAP Kajang is not the only school which has been hit by an outbreak of mumps.
Viral messages over social media claimed that Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi (SBPI) Gombak had also been ordered closed for two weeks after an outbreak of mumps.
