KUALA LUMPUR: An attempt to steal cables from a supermarket was thwarted when a security guard noticed the suspicious activity, prompting the suspects to flee.
The Kajang police headquarters, in a statement today, confirmed the incident at CS Bangi Supermarket after receiving a report at 11.53am today from a 36-year-old Malaysian man.
According to the man, police said, the Nepalese security guard called him about 8.15am to report suspicious activity involving a grey Proton X70. The vehicle was found to have mismatched licence plates, suspected to be fake.
"The guard spotted a car with different front and rear licence plates. The vehicle was seen attempting to pull cables from the supermarket's storage area.
"Closed-circuit television footage shows three masked men, each wearing caps, trying to pull a 100m cable from level B1.
"Their attempt failed when the security guard detected them, causing the suspects to flee the scene."
The case is under investigation under the Penal Code for mischief by cutting or injuring any electric telegraph cable, which carries a penalty of up to two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, if convicted.
"We urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has relevant information to assist in the investigation."
