PASIR MAS: Eyo Hock Seng is the only non-malay Tok Dalang (wayang kulit puppetmaster and storyteller) in Kelantan.
He has been a Tok Dalang for more than 40 years.
The now 63-year-old also among 10 wayang kulit puppetmaster who are still active in performing shows in the state.
Although he has been active as a Tok Dalang, he was nevertheless worried, that he could not find someone to inherit the traditional performing art.
However, two year’s ago, things took a bright turn, as Hock Seng found that one of his grandson’s was showing a keen interest in becoming a wayang kulit storyteller.
His grandson Adam Eyo had shown interest in the puppet shadow play when he was six-years-old.
“Earlier, I was worried when non of my seven children had showed any interest becoming a wayang kulit puppet master, even though I had done many things to attract them to it.
“However, I could see that Adam was attracted, as he was always happy and showed his interest every time I asked him to follow me to my shows.
“Due to his interest, I made him several puppets so that he can practice and learn with the puppets,” said Hock Seng when met at his home in Kampung Pasir Parit near Chekok here, today.
The wayang kulit puppet master who is known as `Pak Cu’ among his fans and villagers, said he would continue to impart knowledge and train Adam until h reaches 12-years-old.
“Seeing his talent, it reminded me of my young self when I began learning how to play wayang kulit. I was at his age at that time and today, I can see myself in him,” said Hock Seng who leads `Sri Campuran’ Wayang Kulit group.
Meanwhile, Adam who is in year two at SK Bendang Pauh said among his favourite wayang kulit characters were `Hanuman’ and `Sri Rama’.
“I like to play with the Hanuman character, as he is a fierce person and likes to quarrel with others.
“My grandfather has promised me that he will continue to train me so that I can replace him one day,” said the youngest of two siblings.
