KUALA LUMPUR: New video has emerged of the horrific accident which caused an SUV to plunge off the Penang Bridge and into the sea, early yesterday.
The footage was recorded by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera mounted high above the bridge, and which provides a bird’s-eye view of the traffic below.
The 8-second clip opens with a view of a number of cars cruising smoothly in the direction of the mainland, when suddenly, at the 0.07 mark, the white Mazda CX-5 enters the bottom left portion of the frame.
The footage shows the vehicle, in a cloud of smoke, apparently moving in a backwards direction and slamming into the guard rail, before tipping over and plunging upside down into the sea.
The SUV creates a giant splash upon hitting the water.
The Toyota Vios, meanwhile, can be seen coming to a rest in the right-most lane, also at the bottom of the screen.
Yesterday , dashcam footage of the accident went viral on social media. It showed the speeding Toyota Vios careening and crashing into the Mazda CX-5, which skidded to the left-most lane and disappeared from view.
A search and rescue (SAR) operation is ongoing to locate the SUV and its driver, student Moey Yun Peng, 20.
Meanwhile, police have recorded a statement from the Toyota Vios driver, who is being treated for injuries at the Seberang Prai Hospital.
It was reported that he has tested positive for ganja.
