Drivers in Penang Bridge crash were friends

GEORGE TOWN: The drivers of the Mazda CX-5 SUV and Toyota Vios that collided on Penang Bridge about 2.30am on Sunday were friends.

This was confirmed by the family of the 20-year-old Mazda driver, Moey Yun Peng.

The impact of the collision had caused the Mazda to skid to the right, flip over the guard rail and plunge into the sea at Km4 of the bridge.

A search and rescue operation involving a number of government agencies is ongoing to locate the car.

“They were only normal friends and rarely spent time together but not sure how they could have been involved in the accident together,” Moey’s sister-in-law, who requested anonymity, told the New Straits Times today.

“I heard that the Toyota Vios guy was frequently involved in accidents.”

Moey’s family members and his girlfriend were at the Batu Uban Marine Police Headquarters, here, today.

After saying that they had been in a relationship for two years, Moey’s girlfriend burst into tears and walked away.

His family members asked marine police about the developments in the case, and especially about the 21-year-old Toyota Vios driver who is being treated at a private hospital.

Moey’s brother, who also asked not to be named, confirmed that the victim was driving alone when the accident occurred.
