Pupils drenched after classroom roof blown away by storm

ARAU: Eighteen Year Three pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tengku Budriah were drenched when the roof of their classroom was blown away by strong winds during rain and storm that hit the area this morning.

The students had just started class at 8am when the incident happened.

School headmaster Azhar Darus said the storm badly damaged the roof of the classroom and Year Six operations room.

“Following the incident, all affected pupils were asked to go to the canteen and were given dry clothes before the class was shifted to another building.

“The incident was the first ever in this school and has been reported to the Perlis State Education Department,” he said when met today.

Meanwhile, Sharifah Azatul Imma Syed Aziz, who is head of the state department’s management and development services sector, said 19 schools were affected by this morning’s storm.

“The storm occurred between 7am and 11am, causing minimal damage to 16 primary schools and three secondary schools.

“SK Tengku Budriah, however, suffered severe damage and repair cost is expected to be about RM150,000,” she added.

Sharifah said no schools have been closed and normal classes have resumed.
