Traffic policeman wins praise for helping to clear clogged drain

KUALA LUMPUR: When most people think of police officers, they may think of uniformed men and women busting down doors, chasing after suspects or handing out traffic tickets.

But there are countless positive police stories chronicling the good deeds that show officers going out of their way to help others.

A case in point is a recent viral video on Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement (JSPT)’s Facebook page, which showed a traffic police officer clearing out a blocked drainage by the roadside after a heavy rain.

The video showed the police officer reaching out with his bare hands into the drain and pulling out rubbish.

Following that, many netizens praised the officer for going above and beyond his duty.

Jerry Chong commented: “Thank you Tuan. May God bless your kind soul.

Ganesan Vethiah commented: “He has taken his responsibilities beyond his normal duties. We need more of this officer in our administrative systems. Kudos to this officer.”

Zaharah Elias commented: “May Allah bless this police officer for going above and beyond his duty.”

Meanwhile, Traffic Investigation and Enforcement (JSPT) chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Azisman Alias commended the police officer for his dedication. He also stressed that every police officer should take their duty seriously.

“We encourage our officers to give their best to the community even when it goes beyond our scope of duty.

“When the officer passed that area and saw the blockage could trigger a bigger flood and traffic jam, he did what needed to be done,” he added.

Azisman said the department value all its officers and encourage their dedication by giving them just reward for their extraordinary services.

“Any officer who performs a good deed will receive a letter of appreciation and will be considered for promotion, as enouragement. We want more of our officers to behave in a noble way,” he added.

A spokesman from JSPT has informed NST that the officer in the video was Lans Koperal Mohd Amirul Mohd.

He also said it was an old video which has now been posted on the Facebook page to encourage other officers to go the extra mile to help the public.

The officer has received due praise for his excellent service and is now an outrider for the Deputy Prime Minister.
