ALOR STAR: The Kedah state government today said it supports Johor's move to use Jawi in official matters.
State Religous Exco Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh, who is also the Pengkalan Kundor state assemblyman, said the move by Johor to use Jawi in its religious department’s dealings is a step in the right direction to increase its exposure.
“Many of our children are not familiar with Jawi and they can't read it. A move to introduce Jawi in official capacity will address this issue,” he added.
“This is a positive step forward. It will empower the use of the jawi script among the masses.”
Dr Ismail also said the Kedah government would monitor how Johor implement the initiative.
“We hope to learn from Johor’s experience. We will convene a meeting to discuss this further. For now, we see it as a very positive move,” he added.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal had said starting Jan 1 next year, Jawi would be used in official dealings and letters involving the Johor Islamic Religious Department.
