'WCE not open for use yet'

SERI MANJUNG: West Coast Expressway (WCE) Sdn Bhd has warned road users not to trespass onto the new stretches of the expressway, which have yet to be officially opened to motorists.

Its managing director, Datuk Neoh Soon Hiong, said should any untoward incident occur, it would be a problem for the victim’s family to claim insurance.

“Section 9 and Section 10 (of the WCE), which stretch from Lekir to Changkat Chermin and Changkat Chermin to Beruas, respectively, have yet to be opened to motorists.

“Should any incident happen in those areas the victim’s family members will face difficulty claiming for insurance since both sections have yet to be gazetted,” he told the New Straits Times.

Neoh said this when commenting on two people who were burnt to death and a third who was seriously injured when the car they were travelling in was involved in an accident along Section 10 of the WCE on Thursday.

This is the first fatal accident along that stretch of WCE.

Manjung police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Hanif Othman said R. Arigaran, 28, and S. Mahendran, 26, were killed in the 11pm incident.

“Another man in his 30s sustained severe injuries and is being treated at Manjung Pantai Hospital.

“Investigations revealed that the incident occurred about 11pm along Section 10, which is under construction.

“There were three people in the car. They were travelling from Batu 19 Ayer Tawar Toll Plaza to Beruas when the driver lost control of the vehicle which then rammed into the tyre roller, tandem roller and pavement milling machine, which were parked on the road shoulder.

“The car then burst into flames. The dead were taken to Seri Manjung Hospital for post-mortem.”

He said investigations had led police to believe that the car was being driven at speed, adding that there was no evidence that the occupants were involved in a race with any other vehicle.
