'EMCO will curb illegal foreign traders' activities at Selayang market'

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Federation of Hawkers and Petty Traders Association president Datuk Seri Rosli Sulaiman said he strongly supports the government’s move to enforce the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) in areas around the Selayang Wholesale Market (Pasar Borong Selayang).

He said it is time for stricter action to be taken against unlicensed foreign traders who keep violating the stay-at-home order under the Movement Control Order (MCO).

Rosli alleged that the foreigners are creating problems by congregating at the market, and noted that the number of Covid-19 cases involving non-Malaysians has increased.

“The market and the surrounding areas need to be under lockdown because the market itself is dirty and it stinks because of poor hygiene habits. They spit everywhere on the ground.

“There are a lot of them (foreigners) and they do not seem to care about the MCO in the first place, and keep on breaking rules.

“I went to visit the market and the surrounding areas, including the housing area at Taman Sri Murni, and I saw some, especially foreigners, not complying with the stay-at-home order,” he said.

Rosli added that since the EMCO will be enforced today, the authorities should ensure that the foreigners have valid documents with them while in public.

He said most foreign traders at the Selayang market have been running their businesses without a valid license and it is about time the authorities take stern action against them.

“If they are found with no valid travel documents, authorities should arrest them and deport them to their countries, he said.

Earlier, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that two areas in Selayang have been placed under the EMCO.

The two areas are Pusat Bandar Utara and the Selayang Wholesale Market and its vicinity, involving eight parcels.

The EMCO will be enforced from today until May 3.
