IPOH: The Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria (Mazpa) is appealing for public donations to finance the upkeep and feeding of animals and maintenance of zoos in the country.
Mazpa, the only national zoological association in Malaysia that comprises of zoos from both government and privately-owned institutions throughout the country, has 22 members.
Its chairman, Dr Kevin Lazarus said the Covid-19 pandemic has had a massive impact on zoos and those in the sector.
"It is an uncertain time for our members, who rely on ticket sales, venue rentals and food and beverage sales for income.
"We have to continue with the upkeep of the animals even though the zoos are closed to the public and we have zero revenue coming in," he said, adding it costs a lot in staff salaries as well as animal feed, medicine and other necessities.
Dr Kevin said these are fixed costs that have to be borne by Mazpa's members who are finding it more and more difficult without any income.
He said there were many involved in the sector including qualified professionals, veterinarians, zoologists and zookeepers who ensure all animals are well taken care of.
Established in 1996, Mazpa has played an important role in supporting in-situ wildlife management alongside promoting the tourism sector in the country.
Mazpa has been recognised for encouraging its members in the development of educational and research programs with a view to improving conservation consciousness and management of captive breeding programmes in support of fauna conservation.
Those who wish to help can channel their donations via CIMB account 8002404481 (Malaysian Association of Zoological Parks & Aquaria).
