Azhar Harun resigns as Election Commission chairman

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun has resigned from his post as Election Commission (EC) chairman, effective June 29.

In a statement today, the EC said his resignation was communicated to Istana Negara on June 30, and has been accepted by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

"In line with Article 114 (7) in the Federal Constitution, Dr Azmi Sharom, as EC deputy chairman, will carry out duties as EC chairman until a new head is appointed.

"The EC wishes to express its appreciation to Azhar for his contribution and service," it said.

Azhar was appointed EC chairman in Sept 2018, following the departure of Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.
