KOTA BARU: Attempts by a lorry driver and his attendant to distribute frozen chicken smuggled in from Thailand to local traders ended with the duo being arrested under Ops Benteng, yesterday.
The two, aged 23 and 34, were travelling in their heavy vehicle from Rantau Panjang to Pasir Mas when they were ordered to stop at Lubok Jong at about 7.30pm.
General Operation Force (GOF) Seventh Battalion commanding officer Superintendent Azhari Nusi said a GOF team had spotted the two acting suspiciously.
Upon inspection of the lorry, he said the officers found more than 3,000kg of frozen chicken worth about RM40,000.
"Investigations showed that the frozen chicken was brought in from Thailand for local distribution," he said in a statement today.
Azhari said the two men are being detained for further investigations, and that the lorry, worth about RM100,000, has been seized.
He added that the battalion will continue carrying out Ops Benteng with a focus on nabbing illegal immigrants entering the country, as well as curbing smuggling activities.
