KUALA KRAI: A 2.5-tonne wild male elephant, caught yesterday after it entered a village presumably in search of food, has been relocated to the Kelantan National Park in Kuala Koh.
The operation to relocate the 30-year-old elephant was carried out at Kampung Tok Uban near Lata Rek here, today.
State Wildlife Department director Ady Ermanty Haniff Mohamed Hanif said 25 rangers were involved in the operation, which began at 8am and ended at noon.
He said two tame female elephants, named Rambai and Abot, were used to persuade and lure the wild elephant into relocating.
Ady Ermanty said the wild elephant, which has since been named 'Awang Uban', was part of a herd of between nine and 10 elephants which entered the Lata Rek forest.
"Awang Uban is believed to have entered vegetable farms belonging to local villagers in search of food," he said.
He said the animal was caught at the same village yesterday morning.
"Our rangers went to the scene after receiving villager's reports on its presence in the area," he added.
