Parts of Sungai Lembing town hit by flash floods

KUANTAN: Residents in Sungai Lembing near here today woke up to flash floods triggered by hours of heavy rain since early this morning.

Sungai Kuantan near Bukit Kenau burst its banks resulting in surrounding low-lying areas including the town centre to be inundated with water up to two-meters-deep.

However, no one was evacuated during the floods which hit the area about 6am before it completely receded about 11am.

A police spokesman said Sungai Lembing town located not far from the river was inundated in floodwaters leaving several roads impassable.

"It started raining after midnight and the river water level started to rise before it spilled over to the low lying areas. The floods only lasted for a few hours and the situation has returned to normal.

"This is the first flood incident during the monsoon season this year. Villagers in low-lying areas have been advised to be prepared in case the river might overflow if there was another round of heavy rain," he said when contacted.

Sungai Lembing - once a prosperous tin mining town - is prone to floods and often described as an indicator of the flood situation in the state capital during the monsoon season.
