GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is prepared to provide continuous aid to some 12,300 residents of flats in Persiaran Paya Terubong in Relau and Flat Desa Bistari, Batu Uban, currently placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).
State Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said basic food necessities are the main focus of the state government as those affected may not be able to go to work or even earn a living.
"We will ensure sufficient food supply for all those affected and they will be distributed according to their requests.
"Assistance will also be given to frontliners to ensure they can carry out their jobs smoothly," he said today.
On Saturday, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) would be lifted as scheduled in Penang, except for areas still categorised as red zones.
He said the CMCO would be extended from today to Dec 20 at Mukim 12 in the southwest district and Mukim 13 in the northeast district.
Additionally, he said the EMCO would be implemented at flats at Persiaran Paya Terubong in Relau and Flat Desa Bistari, Batu Uban.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the EMCO would affect some 12,300 people. Of the total, some 10,000 people are from flats in Persiaran Paya Terubong and the remaining 2,300 from Flat Desa Bistari.
Chow said as recommended by the state Health Department, there was a need to implement the EMCO in both localities to prevent the spread of Covid-19 among the people there.
Jagdeep said, besides assistance from the state government, state assemblymen should also play a role to help their constituents affected by the EMCO.
"Each assemblyman is given an allocation. This is the apt time to put the allocation to good use," he added.
