GUA MUSANG: The Kelantan Wildlife Department yesterday captured a wild elephant believed to have damaged crops and killed livestock in Kampung Subong, here.
State wildlife director Ady Ermanty Haniff Mohamed Hanif said the male elephant was captured in a smallholding at the village at about 1pm.
He added the department had sent its team to the village soon after receiving information on the elephant that had destroyed and killed livestock belonging to the villagers recently.
"Eight rangers were sent to the village to track down the wild elephant and they managed to capture it yesterday.
"The elephant aged between 15 and 20-years-old, was believed to have been among a herd of 20 from the nearby Nenggiri forest reserve.
"The animals left their habitats in search for food," he said in a statement.
He said checks also revealed that the captured elephant not only entered Kampung Subong but also two other areas - Kundur and Panggung Lalat located about five kilometres away.
"The elephant had been damaging crops and killing livestock since last month," he said, adding that the elephant would be relocated to the National Park soon.
