2 Bukit OUG condo units damaged in fire, 2 injured [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: Two studio units on the highest floor of a Bukit OUG condominium were razed in an incident at about 9.15pm last night.

The fire is believed to have started at a corner unit before it spread to an adjoining vacant unit on the 12th floor.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, the two victims in their 30s and 50s, who work as airline staff, sustained slight injuries in the fire.

A friend and neighbour of the two victims, Mark Cheladurai, 45, when met at the scene said the victims were fortunate to have made it out safe because the fire was raging and spread very fast.

"My friend and his housemate saved themselves in the nick of time but still suffered slight burns on the foot, arms and legs, while trying to escape the fire. Fortunately, nothing serious happened to the both of them," he said.

Mark, who used to work with the two victims, added that he managed to speak to the victim before he was whisked away into an ambulance.

"He told me he was okay although he clearly looked disoriented and shocked. He also told me to inform the office that he won't be flying in the morning," he said when met.

Mark said an adjoining condo unit was also destroyed in the fire. This adjoining unit was fully furnished and has been vacant for the past two months.

The two victims were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for their burns.

Meanwhile, a Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said in a statement it received a distress call from condo residents about the blaze.

The first fire engine from the Bukit Jalil Fire and Rescue station arrived at the scene at 9.23pm.

"Subsequently, three other Fire and Rescue stations in Jalan Hang Tuah, Sri Petaling and Seputeh deployed personnel and a total of 45 personnel were working at the scene to help put out the raging fire."

Senior Operations Commander, PgB Mohamad Hafidz Yaacob said the fire occurred on the 12th floor of the condominium involving two units measuring 30sq ft by 30 sq ft, each.

"The first house was 90 percent burnt whereas the second unit was 60 percent burnt before we could bring it under control," he said.

The fire was brought under control at 10.10pm and fully doused by 10.31pm.
