MUAR: A woman died while her daughter suffered serious injuries after their car met with an accident with a pick-up truck near the Jalan Temenggong Ahmad intersection in Parit Keroma this morning.
Muar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Zaharudin Rasip said Norain Abu Samah, 41, died on the spot due to bodily injuries in the 7.46am incident.
Her daughter Nur Nabila Alisha Mohd Zalisham, 19, was in the front passenger seat during the incident, he said.
Initial investigation found the Toyota Hilux's 69-year-old driver was heading to Muar town from Parit Jawa, and was driving at high speed, having failed to stop at a red light.
"This resulted in him crashing into the Myvi, which was just moving as the traffic light on her side was green," he said when contacted today.
He said the pickup truck lost control and entered the opposite lane and crashed into four more vehicles.
Another 14 victims in the other vehicles escaped unhurt.
"The blood and urine samples of the Toyota Hilux driver have been submitted to the Chemical Department for alcohol and drug level test.
"The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
A 23-second video of the incident went viral on social media today.
A spokesperson from the Johor Fire and Rescue Department said 13 personnel were deployed to the scene.
A total of six vehicles were involved in the accident including a Nissan Grand Lavina, Nissan Urvan, Van Ford Spectron and another pickup truck.
"The rescue operation ended by 9.08am," said the spokesperson.
