ALOR STAR: Kedah has recorded a 143 per cent spike in dengue fever cases in the first six months of this year, including one death case.
State Health Department director Dr Othman Warijo said as of June 11, 490 cases had been reported, an increase of 143.8 per cent as compared to corresponding period last year.
"As of June 11, 2022, 490 dengue cases were reported in Kedah as compared to 201 cases reported during the same period last year.
"There have been 55 dengue outbreaks reported within this period as compared to only eight outbreaks reported in a corresponding period in 202," he said in a statement.
Dr Othman said out of the 55 dengue outbreaks, three hotspots had been contained, 44 outbreaks ceased while another eight outbreaks were still active.
He said a total 2,887 compound with total value of RM1,382,850 had been issued to premises owners caught for having Aedes mosquitoes breeding spots.
The compounds were issued under the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975.
Dr Othman said the department had also intensified preventative measures and control orders in affected areas to stop the chain of infections.
"This includes vector control measures such as inspecting premises, fogging, eliminating mosquito breeding sites and health awareness, and education campaigns," he said.
