KUALA LUMPUR: The Traffic Master Plan 2040 (PITKL2040) emphasises on different aspects of the transport network, with the main aim being to reduce road congestion in the capital.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah, in unveiling the plan today, said that, among others, it is aimed at achieving a modal split of 70:30 for public transportation and private vehicles by 2040.
"Currently, the modal split for public transport and private vehicles is 25:75.
"To realise the transition, the focus of the planning must be emphasised on expanding the rail network, improving bus services and feeder service, which is the first-and-last mile, comprising the pedestrian, bicycle and micro mobility," he said in his speech during the launch of PITKL2040 at Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) today.
PITKL2040 also suggested increasing park-and-ride facilities near public transport stations.
Mahadi said the plan identified 50 roads with missing links and nine roads in dire need of upgrades.
He said PITKL2040 was prepared using the current and future traffic data, land use and development intensity, as well as rail alignments, locations of park-and-ride facilities, and transit station catchment areas.
It takes into consideration all the references gathered from the Kuala City Plan 2020, draft to Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040, and traffic impact assessment (TIA) report.
"In 2040, the number of residents in KL is expected to rise to about 2.6 million residents, compared to 1.9 million today.
"So, we can imagine that more vehicles will be plying the main roads of KL by 2040."
