Landslide: Six workers trapped at Tenom Pangi hydroelectric power station rescued

KOTA KINABALU: Six people who were trapped at the Tenom Pangi hydroelectic power station following a landslide nearby have been rescued.

They were reported safe after the Fire and Rescue Department completed their operation at 9.30am.

The operation was led by Senior Fire Officer II Mohamad Herryzan Epui Ridzuan.

He said the landslide had blocked the main entrance of the plant and advised the workers and the public not the enter the area for the time being.

Meanwhile, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) said for safety reasons, the operation of the power plant has been temporarily halted.

Its chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Hj Jaafar said SESB was still examining the situation and assessing the damage.

"An emergency response plan was activated and all workers were safely evacuated," he said.

He said the incident did not affect the electricity supply to the state's grid system.

The continuous rain since yesterday also caused the overflowing of water and large boulders blocking the entrance to the plant and gate intake, he said.
