HULU LANGAT: Heavy downpours caused flash floods in parts of Hulu Langat and Shah Alam this evening.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said floodwaters in Shah Alam had started to subside, but Sungai Serai in Hulu Langat continues to rise.
"As of 7.45pm, Sungai Serai continues to swell, filling some of the low lying areas. We have activated the flood command centre and our assets and personnel are all on standby, in case the situation worsens," he said when contacted.
Unlike in Shah Alam, Norazam said the water in Sungai Serai was still rising as rain continues to pour in the district.
"There are no evacuees but just now at about 6pm, firemen saved a couple who were stranded at their farm house, after the surroundings were inundated in flood water," he said.
In Shah Alam, he said, the evening heavy downpour caused water to overflow from monsoon drains, onto the road and several nearby housing areas in Taman Sri Muda, Seksyen 17, Seksyen 24, Seksyen 25, Bukit Naga Seksyen 32 and Kota Kemuning.
"We have activated the flood response team at both locations and so far the situation in Shah Alam seems to be improving.
"Preliminary checks showed the water level only rose up to the knee level in certain places, believed to be caused by clogged drains in the area. So far, there is no need for evacuation.
"However boats and firemen have been despatched to the affected areas," Norazam said, adding that it was unlikely a massive flood would occur.
