Senior citizen killed, wife injured in 4-vehicle pile up near Tapah

TAPAH: A senior citizen died on the spot while his wife was injured after an accident involving four vehicles at KM358.7 of the North-South Expressway, yesterday.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said based on the initial investigations, the couple's Mazda CX-5 SUV hit a PLUS Ronda vehicle that stopped on the emergency lane to assist a Suzuki Swift driver with a punctured tyre.

"As a result of the collision, the four-wheel drive vehicle then hit the rear of the Suzuki Swift vehicle while the victim lost control of his SUV and veered off to the right lane," he said in a statement.

Mohd Yusri said the SUV was then hit from behind by a Kia Optima vehicle.

"This led to the death of a 70-year-old man who was driving the SUV. The victim's remains were then sent to Tapah Hospital for further action.

"His 59-year-old wife sustained injuries to her head and was sent to Slim River Hospital for treatment.

"The driver and passengers from other vehicles involved however were reported to be safe and uninjured," he said adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act of 1987.

He appealed to members of the public with information on the accident to contact Tapah traffic police investigations officer Inspector Ruzainal Aman Ruslan at 012-450 0968.
