Wild bull elephant that caused RM65,000 in losses relocated to state park

KOTA BARU: The state Wildlife and National Parks Department today relocated a wild bull elephant that was captured by rangers in Kuala Krai on Saturday.

Its director, Mohamad Hafid Rohani, said the elephant was relocated to the Royal Belum State Park in Perak using two decoy elephants, namely Rambai and Abot from the Kuala Gandah Elephant National Conservation Centre.

"The elephant was captured on Jan 14 after the department received a report from villagers about elephant rampages in Kampung Sungai Taku, Pasir Kelang, Kuala Krai.

"The incident on Jan 9 caused villagers to suffer RM65,000 in losses."

He said the elephant, aged between 15 and 20 and weighing about two tonnes, is believed to be part of a herd of 14 elephants from the Sokor Permanent Forest Reserve.

"The wild elephant is believed to have left its habitat to look for food."

Hafid said the operation in Kampung Sungai Taku was the first one by the department this year.

Last year, the department captured 19 elephants in the Jeli, Gua Musang and Kuala Krai districts.
