PUTRAJAYA: Road users on 12 selected highways will be able to use debit and credit cards to pay toll soon.
The system, which is an initiative from the Works Ministry will provide new alternatives and convenience to highway users in the toll payment process.
Its Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the system will be implemented on the Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway (MEX), Duta Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE), Ampang Kuala Lumpur Elevated Expressway (AKLEH), Pantai Baru Expressway (NPE), KESAS and several other highways.
"Aside from existing payment methods such as the 'Touch n Go' System, SmartTag and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), now users can make payments using debit and credit cards given that their account balance is sufficient.
"MEX Expressway concessionary Maju Expressway Sdn Bhd (MESB) is one of the first 12 highways to implement the open toll payment system with it being tested starting from July 2023 to ensure the readiness and smooth operations in line with standards which have been set by the Malaysian Highways Authority (LLM)," he said after testing the system at the Putrajaya Toll Plaza, this afternoon.
Earlier, he launched the open toll payment system logo which will be used on signs in toll lanes.
He said the ministry is always informed about the level of readiness and the progress of tests being carried out in stages by LLM together with the highway concession company.
"The implementation of SPT should be carried out carefully and in detail taking into account various processes involved such as technical aspects, security, legislation and the handling of the toll transaction record itself to ensure the comfort and safety of users is always prioritised.
On the MEX Expressway, the open payment system will begin in six lanes starting tomorrow as a trial process before being expanded to all lanes in the three existing toll plazas, namely Salak Selatan Toll Plaza, Putrajaya Toll Plaza and Seri Kembangan Toll Plaza, at the end of next September.
