SUNGAI PETANI: A routine evening walk by an elderly man and his 19-month-old grandson ended in tragedy when they were found drowned in a pool near a restaurant in Taman Kempas here, yesterday.
Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan said the bodies of the 78-year-old man and his grandson were discovered by passersby at 7.20pm, who promptly notified the police and the Fire and Rescue Department.
"Policemen from Tikam Batu police station rushed to the scene and found the bodies floating in the one-metre deep abandoned pool.
"Initial investigation showed that there was no element of foul play," he said in a statement today.
Zaidy added that according to the boy's father, it was typical for the victim to take the child for an evening stroll after picking him up from his mother, who works at a restaurant on Jalan Kempas.
"The man went to look out for the victims after they failed to return home by 7pm as they usually do.
"He rushed to the pool after seeing people gathering at the site of the abandoned pool," he said.
Zaidy said the bodies were sent to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for a post-mortem.
