Sabah advises public not to consume shellfish from KK waters

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has issued a warning about collecting and eating shellfish from Kota Kinabalu waters.

In a notice issued by Sabah Fisheries Department, the authorities have confirmed a case of "Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning" (PSP) in the Kota Kinabalu District, specifically in the area of Likas Bay.

"(The sample tested to be) exceeding dangerous levels and causing poisonous shellfish that can be harmful to public health.

"As a precautionary measure, the public is advised not to collect and consume shellfish from that area.

"The Sabah Fisheries Department will monitor the developments of this PSP incident from time to time as a precautionary measure."

PSP is a serious health concern caused by the consumption of shellfish contaminated with harmful toxins.

Symptoms can range from mild neurological effects to severe respiratory distress, and in extreme cases, it can be fatal. Given the potential risks associated with PSP, authorities are taking immediate steps to protect public safety.
