KUALA LUMPUR: The police officer who rammed his car into a motorcycle ridden by a teenager in Meru, Friday, causing his death, will be charged with murder.
Attorney General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, in a statement tonight, said the suspect will be charged in the Ipoh Magistrates Court tomorrow.
"The Attorney General's Chambers refers to a traffic accident case on Dec 15, 2023 near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jati, Jalan Taman Jati 1, Ipoh, Perak, involving a car driven by a senior police officer and a motorcycle ridden by a 17-year-old student, causing the latter's death.
"After studying the outcome of the investigation and statements contained in the investigation papers, the department finds sufficient material for a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code," he said.
He said the magistrate's court will then set a date for the case to be transferred to the Ipoh High Court for trial.
Muhammad Zaharif Affendi, 17, who was riding a motorcycle was killed after he was hit by the 44-year-old suspect driving a Perodua Ativa.
The suspect, a police deputy superintendent stationed at the Kedah police contingent headquarters, allegedly left the scene shortly after the incident.
It was reported that an altercation earlier took place between the teenager and the suspect. The teen was allegedly revving his motorcycle engine, which incurred the suspect's wrath.
The suspect, in his car, allegedly chased the teen for almost a kilometre before crashing into him from behind.
Due to the impact, Zaharif fell and was dragged almost five metres.Zaharif died at the scene.
A post-mortem examination conducted at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital indicated the cause of death as chest and abdomen injuries from the incident.
The suspect allegedly turned back to the location after the incident but left the scene when a crowd built up. He later lodged a police report at a nearby police station.
The suspect was detained and remanded for three days.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said a detailed and comprehensive investigation would be carried out in a transparent manner.
Zaharif's family expressed hope that the crash which led to the teenager's death would be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
The teenager's father, Muhd Zamrie Zainal Abidin, 55 said no motorist would purposely crash into another human being without intention.
