Sinkhole appears along Kuantan-Segamat stretch, forcing closure till Jan 28

PEKAN: The Kuantan-Segamat road has been temporarily closed to all vehicles following a sinkhole incident at Km102 of the stretch yesterday.

The Pekan Public Works Department(PWD), in a statement, said the stretch will be closed till Jan 28 to facilitate repair works at the caved-in section.

PWD advised motorists travelling from Kuantan to Muadzam Shah in Rompin to use the Kuantan-Endau stretch through Pekan town before exiting at Leban Condong towards Muadzam Shah.

"Road users travelling from Gambang to Muadzam Shah can use the Pekan Batu Balek road before travelling towards the Kuantan-Endau stretch.

"The alternative route for road users from Muadzam Shah travelling to Kuantan is through Leban Condong-Muadzam Shah before connecting to the Kuantan-Endau stretch(coastal road)," read the statement.

The sinkhole which appeared around noon yesterday is believed to be due to continuous heavy rain that lasted several hours in the area.

In Jan 2021, two sections, at Km63 and Km73 of the Kuantan-Segamat road sank and collapsed due to a landslide following heavy rain. The road was closed for four-days for repair works.
