JOHOR BARU: The Batu Pahat Municipal Council (MPBP) has allocated RM3.7 million for 18 tree maintenance projects, including pruning.
Semerah assemblyman Fared Mohd Khalid said the recent incident in which a man was killed after a tree fell on his car in Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, and other such cases had prompted the council to take precautionary measures.
He said an inventory of trees along Jalan Peserai-Semerah was ongoing.
"The main aim is to ensure that the trees are well maintained and do not pose any threat to motorists and the public."
Earlier Fared, who is also state Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman, said while he appreciated greenery, the safety of road users and residents was his priority.
"The trees will not be felled, but treated, trimmed and their roots checked.
"The ones with root rot or deemed unsafe will be cut.
"Given the rainy and windy weather, it is best that precautionary measures are taken," he said.
