TAWAU: An elderly man died when the motorcycle he was riding in was involved in an accident at Kilometre 27 of Jalan Tawau - Semporna near here, yesterday evening.
Tawau district police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said the accident at about 3.55pm involved a motorcycle and a multi-purpose vehicle.
He said the 70-year-old victim was riding pillion on a motorcycle with by a 15-year-old student from the direction of Inderasabah towards Kampung Block 31, when they collided with the car driven by a 45-year-old man from the direction of Tawau Airport towards the city centre.
"Preliminary investigations at the scene found that the motorcyclist had suddenly changed his direction. Due to the distance being too close, the MPV driver did not have time to avoid and hit the back of the motorcycle's left tire causing both passengers to be dragged to the left shoulder of the road," he said in a statement last night.
Jasmin said the motorcycle passenger died at the scene of the incident due to severe injuries and a broken right leg and the teenage boy also sustained injuries while the MPV driver and passenger did not suffer any injuries.
"Further investigations are still underway and the case is being investigated in accordance with Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987," he said.
