Septuagenarian born with hand and leg defects makes origami paper craft for a living

TANAH MERAH: Septuagenarian Mohd Zain Dollah was born with a defect on both his hands and legs but the disability has not prevented him from living a fulfilling life.

When he was 20, Mohd Zain become a deejay to earn an income to support his family.

But since 2022, the 73-year-old has ventured into a new career - making origami paper craft.

Mohd Zain said he decided to make the origami paper craft and sell them as souvenirs or as wedding doorgifts.

"Many think it is hard for a disabled person like me to work. With this kind of physical condition and standing at only 1.2m, it is not easy for me to move around.

"But this will not deter me from working. After leaving the deejay job, l choose to venture into this origami paper craft.

"I have been making souvenirs and doorgifts from the A4 paper of various colours," said the father of eight.

When met at his home in Kampung Bukit Kechik here yesterday, Mohd Zain said he managed to produce between 10 to 15 sets of origami craft in a day.

"Making this origami craft, one must be patient and careful. I need to cut and fold the paper into small pieces.

"I will later join the small paper and glue it together before shaping it as a container or a vase.

"It takes me hours doing the work everyday but l enjoy it," he said.

Mohd Zain said he sells the crafted paper, depending on the size and type.

"My clients are normally from Kelantan but there are also some from other states like Terengganu, Johor, Perak, Melaka, Kedah and Perak, and some come from as far as Singapore," he added.

With the help of his fifth son Mohd Zuhairi, 33, they also sell the products on social media.

Mohd Zain said he would continue making the origami paper craft as the income was good.SSS
