Clearing of squatter settlements in Sabah to curb water, electricity theft, social issues

KOTA KINABALU: Authorities are tackling water and electricity theft by addressing the squatters areas issue here.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) said the ongoing squatter problem is persistent and needs urgent attention.

"The increasing number of squatter areas has led to a rise in critical social issues and disorganised infrastructure systems, resulting in illegal wiring, water theft and other problems," it said in a statement.

In light of the recent demolition of illegal squatters at Kampung Kalansanan near here, DBKK prohibits all affected residents from rebuilding their homes in the same area.

"The settlement is unrecognised and will face demolition as stipulated under the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (Building) By-Laws 1951.

"Strict action will be taken against those who disobey and rebuild their homes in the area.

"At the same time, DBKK will also take action against any party r individual who builds houses or any structure on government or privately-owned land without approval from the DBKK."

DBKK said it will also investigate and take legal action against any person acting as an intermediary in managing or approving new settlements within the Kota Kinabalu city administration area.

It added the involvement of intermediaries in granting approval for new settlements has never been recognised by DBKK and constitutes a legal offence.

"Members of the public with information regarding the involvement of intermediaries in new settlement management can report to DBKK at 088-521800."
