KANGAR: A senior officer with the Perlis State Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAIPs) and two men who are being investigated for allegedly raking RM1.183 million in bribes to register marriages in the state, have been released on bail yesterday.
A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) source said the suspects aged between 25 and 52 were released after their remand order expired.
"They were released on MACC bail after completing their medical check-up at a hospital here.
"However, they are still subjected to being called for further questioning should there be a need," he said when contacted today.
Meanwhile, Perlis MACC director Mohd Nor Adha Ab Ghani when contacted confirmed that the suspects have been released on bail pending further investigation.
On June 5, the MACC had detained a senior officer with JAIPs and an imam and the latter's son in connection with the case.
It was reported that the trio is being investigated for allegedly taking bribes from Malaysian couples to register their marriage with local religious authorities after getting married in a neighbouring country.
