Huge fire destroys 56 containers in Wangsa Maju

KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 60 containers were completely destroyed in a huge fire at a construction yard in Wangsa Maju here today (Wednesday).

Some of the containers had been converted into "rumah kongsi", while others were either empty or used to store tools and equipment.

Wangsa Maju fire station chief M. Letchumanan said the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department operations control centre received a distress call at 9.08am.

"A total of 21 personnel, three fire engines and a water tanker was deployed to the scene.

"When we arrived, we found that the fire had engulfed a number of containers there.

"Our checks revealed that some of these containers had been converted into 'rumah kongsi', while others were either empty or used to store tools," he said in a statement.

He added that the firemen had to use "offensive" and "defensive" control measures to stop the flames from spreading to nearby structures.

"We managed to control the fire at around 10.27am before finally putting it out at 12.02pm.

"A total of 56 containers were completely destroyed in the incident," he said, adding that no one was hurt.

He said the fire investigation unit was working at the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
