Kuantan carjacker gets 24 months' jail for car and phone theft

KUANTAN: A labourer who sped off after carjacking a Honda City at a petrol station in Semambu here on June 3 was sentenced to 16 months' jail by the magistrate's court today.

Mohamad Shahrul Ezwan Nordin, 40, pleaded guilty after the charge was read out before Magistrate Tengku Eliana Tengku Kamarulzaman.

According to the charge sheet, the father-of-six was alleged to have stolen a Honda City belonging to Norhalina Mohamed at a petrol station in Semambu here about 3.10pm on June 3.

The offence under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft carries a jail term of up to five years or fine, or both.

In mitigation, Nur Hafidza Baharudin from the National Legal Aid Foundation told the court that her client had repented and will never repeat such an act.

Deputy public prosecutor Ezuain Farhana Ahmad told the court to deliver a deterrent sentence which will serve as a lesson to the accused.

Tengku Eliana sentenced the accused who was currently serving his jail term at Bentong prison for a separate offence to 16 months' behind bars.

Meanwhile, Tengku Eliana also sentenced Shahrul Ezwan to eight months' prison after he pleaded guilty to stealing a handphone belonging to a woman at a grocery shop at Kuala Penor here about 6pm on June 3.

The charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code carries up to seven years' imprisonment or fine, or both, upon conviction.

Shahrul Ezwan was represented by counsel Nurul Syafiqa Syeba Atan from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

In a separate courtroom, Shahrul Ezwan was charged with possessing a stolen Honda EX5 motorcycle with a fake registration number which belonged to one Muhammad Tarmizi Abdullah at a petrol station about 3.30pm on June 3.

He was charged under Section 411 for having in his possession stolen properties, which carries up to five years' jail and a fine.

Shahrul Ezwan, clad in orange prison outfit, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Raja Norshuzianna Shakila Raja Mamat fixed July 31 for sentencing.

Prosecution was handled by Siti Aisyah Abdul Wahab.

On June 14, the Raub magistrate court sentenced him to eight months behind bars after he pleaded guilty for trespassing into a house which belonged to a 34-year-old woman in Bentong on June 4.

Shahrul Ezwan made headlines in June when he coolly rode a stolen motorcycle to a petrol station before jumping into an idling Honda City car with a senior citizen inside on June 3 before he was arrested in Bentong the following day.
