Fire department captures 29 pythons in Shah Alam drain [WATCH]

SHAH ALAM: Firemen from the Fire and Rescue Department captured 29 baby reticulated pythons in a drain near a restaurant at Section 20 here.

Operations commander, Radziah Osman said they received a call at around 9.56pm yesterday.

"A passer-by was walking in the area and noticed the snakes and immediately called us.

"A fire engine and six firemen responded to the call and arrived at the scene seven minutes later," she said when contacted today.

She said upon arrival, the firemen found the snakes in a drain near the restaurant.

"We sized-up the location and began snaring the snakes.

"We caught a total of 29 pythons here, measuring between 30-50cm long each.

"We believe the snakes had hatched not too long ago based on their size," she said, adding that this was not the first time they have caught so many snakes in the area.

She said last year they had also responded to a similar call and caught 26 snakes from the same area.

"All the snakes were caught before we took them to another undisclosed location where they were released safely," she said reassuring the public that the snakes were released in an area far from people.

She declined to elaborate further on the location.

According to the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) the reticulated python is protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.

Based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature this species of snake is said to be the longest in the world.

The longest reticulated python ever recorded was measured in at a staggering 10 metres.

These snakes only reproduce once every two to four years, and are said to be able to have at least 50 to 100 eggs laid in a single clutch.
