ROMPIN: The fatal elephant attack on Aug 9, which resulted in the death of an Indonesian worker at the Rangkaian Tebu Hitam plantation, is the first of its kind reported in the area.
Rompin police chief Deputy Superintendent Nor Azman Yusof said that there had been no prior reports of wild elephant sightings or attacks in the plantation.
"This is the first incident of its kind here. We have informed the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to track down the animal," he said when contacted today.
In the 3pm incident on Aug 9, a man was pursued by three wild elephants and subsequently trampled by one of them. He was killed on the spot. (https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2024/08/1090252/plantation-worker-kil...)
Meanwhile, state Perhilitan director Rozidan Md Yasin said thermal drones had been deployed to monitor elephant movements at the plantation.
"Since Aug 9, our team has been at the site, setting up cameras and conducting monitoring efforts, but no elephant activity has been detected yet."
He advised plantation workers who encounter elephants to seek safety by hiding behind large trees or boulders.
"Do not follow elephant tracks, as this can provoke the animals and lead to dangerous situations," he said.
