Viral video claiming tourist boat capsized in Pangkor untrue, say police

MANJUNG: Police today denied reports of a tourist boat capsizing near Pangkor island.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Nordin Abdullah said police were alerted to a video of the incident, which was widely shared on WhatsApp and social media today.

"Our investigations showed that the incident did not occur in Pangkor island but abroad," he said.

It is learnt that the video was actually of an incident in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, on Nov 14 last year, where one person died after the ferry sank in rough seas.

Mohamed Nordin advised the public not to spread false information and to avoid making baseless claims that may disturb the peace.

A two-minute, 39-second video recently went viral, showing a two-deck ferry carrying dozens of passengers taking on water, causing panic among passengers, including a baby wearing a life jacket.

A message claiming that the incident occurred at the popular holiday destination Pangkor island was also widely shared.
